A Note from the Superintendent

Dear Castro Valley Unified Families & Community,

It is with great joy and gratitude that I welcome you to a new school year. Over these first weeks, I have been inspired by the energy, compassion, and commitment I’ve seen in our classrooms, on our campuses, and across our community. From our dedicated staff and amazing students to our supportive families, Castro Valley truly embodies collaboration and care.

This year, we are building on our strengths, while also looking ahead together. My focus is on listening, learning, and partnering with you to ensure that every student feels a strong sense of belonging and is supported to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our schools are at their best when many voices are included, and I look forward to hearing from you as we shape the future of CVUSD.

We are also excited to share the first edition of the CVUSD Community Connection, our quarterly newsletter. Inside, you’ll find highlights of the fantastic things happening across the district along with important upcoming events. I am eager for all that we will accomplish in partnership this year.

Take good care,

Dr. Nia Rashidchi
Superintendent, Castro Valley Unified School District

California’s Phone-Free Schools Act – What it means for CVUSD

A new California law (AB 3216) requires all public schools to limit or ban use of smartphones and smartwatches during the school day. CVUSD is working with students, staff, and families now to shape a policy that boosts focus, supports mental health, and enhances learning. Look out for opportunities to share your thoughts — our plan will be in place by July 1, 2026, with implementation in the 2026-27 school year.

Chabot Elementary School hosted its first Multicultural Night on September 12, bringing together students, families, and staff to celebrate our vibrant and diverse community. The evening featured displays, cultural sharing, and food highlighting a wide range of countries and traditions.

During morning advisory, all Canyon Middle School students worked on building community by designing a cube to present themselves. Students needed to write their entire name and color the top of the cube using CMS colors and based on their grade: 8th grade yellow (golden), 7th grade black and 6th grade red. Students then could design and color the cube in words/pictures/symbols which presented their interests. The completed cubes were cut-out and placed onto onto background by the CMS Leadership class and hung round campus to show the diversity and to recognize each student.
